I remember the days when i started to learn guitar, and every time only one question was in my mind. Shall I learn playing the guitar in this month? Many days passed. Months after months. It took me couple of months for learning the concepts and skills of guitar playing. But then after learning guitar I came to know that there were many things which I could skip in guitar learning. This could save a lot of time. But, frankly speaking I had no one who could guide me about guitar playing.
Few days ago, I got an email, that what is needed to learn the guitar in just 30 days and how can it be achieved. And then I had whole memories of past in my mind appealing me that its time to share the experience so that a beginner guitarist can save tons of time in guitar learning.
So musicians, sit tight and read this blog till the last line carefully because this is really going to be useful in your guitar learning journey. I could not learn guitar in 1 month because I did not have that guide line which, now, I can provide you.
Is it possible to learn guitar in 30 days at home?
It depends upon what actually you want to learn. If you just want to learn some important evergreen chords structure and common strumming patterns to impress your friends and family then the answer is YES! You can learn all the basic things which will give you a good startup in guitar journey. But again, the knowledge is endless.
If you think that you are going to be a concert level guitarist after one month of guitar learning then it may be the biggest misunderstanding of your life. I am not demotivating you, I am just setting your limits so that your expectations should not be vanished. Because I know after one month many of the learner guitarist will try to say that I provided the wrong information.
But belief me, you are definitely going to play the songs and your friends and family will get impressed by you however the purpose should not be to impress the audience. The purpose should be to learn the concepts and techniques of guitar playing carefully. One wrong start can waste your whole musical journey. If you adopt wrong method and techniques of guitar playing then these will always bother you in advanced learning phase. So learning quickly is not a problem but learning inaccurately is a biggest problem.
What is required for learning guitar in 30 days? Five “must rules” for you!
Okay, so you are convinced that you are going to play the songs after one month, now one simple question will shake your mind “how I gonna make it?” or “what is the secret?”
So before going to the technical things we must not forget to discuss on the moral points because if you are committed to play the guitar in front of your friends or family then you must stick to the plan and no one or nothing should be able to pull you back. Means, you have to learn, you have to learn!! Only one thing should keep rolling in your mind for this one month that you have to make it! Its time to do something you were always passionate about. Now, Its time to give the reply to those who always think you can’t! Its time to learn. Its time to rock! For that, you have to set the rules for yourself for this purposeful one month.
Rule #1 Keep all other Tasks in Second Priority for 1 Month.
The one and only important thing, which matters to you for these 30 days, is guitar. It is your parents, it is your guru, it is your best friend, it is your first love. It is everything for you. You put the guitar above anything else which exists in this world. This rule should not be judged that you are free from your daily life responsibilities. But, by virtue of the brain, we can simply justify what is important for us and what is not. For example, if you or your relative is sick then its your responsibility to look after and you can never skip this.
But just look at the following things which you have to manage wisely to save a lot of time for your passion:
Excessive use of social media
Meaningless long talks on mobile phones
Drinking and smoking
Evening gossips and wandering with guys
Rule #2 Choose a place for Practising where no one Disturbs you
Guitar is such an instrument which catches audience’s attention within seconds if played soulfully. But it is the most irritating thing when one person is practising the same thing for hours and hours. Like you are holding a chord and keeps the same thing strumming for 3 hours, then it will be a most harassing thing for the people who are listening it. Just try to understand my point. I am not advising you to be a totally introvert for these thirty days. But understand what will happen if a person needs rest and he has noise around him. Then he will simply make such comments that you either have to leave that place. Or otherwise, you have to convince him that its a very good instrument.
And finally, the whole incident may demotivate you. So why to get demotivated? Just choose a place for practice where no one disturbs you for hours long practice and also, others are not disturbed. The best place to practice guitar would be such a room which can be closed efficiently to absorb the sound inside the room itself or otherwise you can practice on the roof where no one has staring eyes on you thinking that you are an alien ;).
Rule #3 Do not get Distracted from comments by anyone and do not expect Praise
This is very important thing which you should try to apply in your real life irrespective of the field you are passionate about. I have remembered the great words from the great Mahatma Gandhi Ji
” First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.”
So please, for the sake of your passion, do not get distracted by any of the comments by your colleague or family members because only you know that you are going to make it. Also, if anyone asks you to play any song or whichever you learnt so far, do not expect appreciation by him. It will also make you nervous if you expected great words from him.
Always consider the fact in the mind:
“If you make mistakes, people will laugh at you and if you are best at your work, people will get jealous”
Just remember that you are learning it as your passion and passion needs no appraisal of the fools who even do not know the alphabets of your field.
Rule #4 Do not limit your Practice Time in Hours
This is a very commonly asked question from the beginner guitarists. How many hours should I practice in a day for one month to learn the guitar? The only answer to this question is that “Are you serious about guitar learning? Then do not count your efforts in the hours or days!” Again if you are not satisfied with my answer then my answer would be: “Give as many hours as you can, in the beginning so that you can get a good start“.
Now, it does not make any sense of telling that what time of the day you should prefer to practice. You can practice in morning, evening, afternoon or night whenever its possible for you. If you have come from somewhere and have to spend 30 minutes home before going to somewhere else, then also you can practice rather then wasting time on your smartphone. So practice limitless and do not bound your precious practice in the units of time.
Rule #5 Record your daily Progress in mobile every Night before you Sleep and Compare with the yesterday practice
Whatever you learn and practice in the day, just record from your mobile before you want to sleep. Listen and compare it to the last day’s recording. And if you are not satisfied by your performance then its not the time to sleep. You have to practice little more to make your day worthy. And believe me, just listen the practice recording of your guitar playing of last week, you will feel that you are better now. After-all, improving day by day is the key to perfection.
Rule #6 Remain Motivated and Visualise the Bright Days Ahead
It is the most common cause of failure for most of the beginner guitarists. They start with the big dreams and lacks practice and devotion, and they get failed.. and quit guitar playing. And, then the guitar becomes the part of their showcase in the living room. Please, always remember that why you started playing guitar? Is was the only purpose? Are you so coward that you can’t even work for your passion? Then what is the meaning of passion.
Whenever you get demotivated, always remember the following line:
“You never choose music. Music chooses you because it knows you will respect it.”
We often say that I choose this art. Sorry to say but we are wrong. The God gives the gift of the art to the only persons who are worth it and who really respects art. Its a separate topic of discussion that how we realize the love for that art and how we are drown into it.
So, if music chose us then we have to prove that we are worth it. And if you understand this, believe me you will never quit learning guitar even it may seem difficult to you.
What and how, are you supposed to learn Guitar in 1 month?
So you are morally charged now and would be wondering that after all these things what and how I am going to learn the guitar in 1 month? Now you have fixed the time limit for learning the guitar, you have also to understand that what things are for your concern and which topics are not so important as you are. If you have not set the limit for learning, you may be confused all the time because you may be giving your valuable time to the things which are not so important actually.
So you have to focus on the things which are very important for giving a good start to the initial phase of your guitar learning. Reason behind, because in one month learning, your focus will be on getting the output and not the deep knowledge. We will always try to emphasise on practice during these 30 days rather than extended music theory. However, for a serious musician, music theory is more or equally important rather than instrument playing. I have also suggested the number of days you are supposed to learn the particular topic, however it depends upon person to person according to their capabilities.
Tip #1 Memorise the names of all musical notes:
Notes are the basic building block of the music. There are total 12 musical notes, namely:
Now, as shown above, there are 7 notes like: C,D,E,F,G,A,B
And 5 notes are also among these 7 notes but are having “#“ (read “sharp”) or “b“ (read “flat”)
For example the note between C and D is C# (C Sharp) or Db (D flat). Both are same, it means; C# = Db. You can write whichever you want.
Then why two different names (sharp and flat) are given?
This is due to the fact that a music scale should denote all the forms of 7 notes. However this is not so important for the purpose we are learning the notes. The only concern in 30 days guitar learning is that you music write, learn and speak the names of all the 12 musical notes.
The notes C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C (collection of eight notes) in sequence is called octave.
The interval between two consecutive notes is called half step or semitone. For example the gap between C and C# notes is of half step. Similarly the gap between E and F notes is of half step because there is no sharp or flat note between these two. It is the smallest interval in the music.
Whole step or full step or tone is just double of half step or semitone. For example if we move from C to D (step 1- C to C#/Db, step 2- C#/Db to D) then its called whole step or full step or tone.
Tip #2 Theoretical knowledge of Music Scales:
Now what are scales? In music theory, a scale is any set of musical notes ordered by fundamental frequency or pitch. A scale ordered by increasing pitch is an ascending scale, and a scale ordered by decreasing pitch is a descending scale. All 12 notes have their own set of notes for particular scale.
Sequence C,D,E,F,G,A,B is called C Major Scale.
Sequence D,E,F#,G,A,B,C# is called D Major Scale.
Likewise, all 12 musical notes have their own major scales and each scale is unique.
Oh, now what is this major and minor scale? Read following paragraphs for the answer.
How scales are made?
There are fixed formulas for the scales. It means its the only steps (half step/whole step, discussed earlier) which decides the nature of the scale.
For example any major scale can be found out by using below formula:
R(1)-W(2)-W(3)-H(4)-W(5)-W(6)-W(7)-R(of higher octave) where R= root note (the note whose major scale is desired to know), W- whole step, H- half step.
For example C Major scale will be:
R(1)-W(2)-W(3)-H(4)-W(5)-W(6)-W(7)-R(8/ octave completed)
C(1)-D(2)-E(3)-F(4)-G(5)-A(6)-B(7)-C(8/ octave completed)
What are other types of scale?
There are plenty of the scales but the following are important in for beginner guitarists:
- Chromatic Scales
- Major Scales
- Minor Scales
- Pentatonic Scales

Names of Chords:
What is a chord?
When two or more notes are played at the same time from any instrument then the sound produced is called chord. For example if C-E-G notes are played in piano at the same instance then the sound produced will be a sound of C Major chord.
Now do not get confused by chords and scales. These both are entirely different! A scale is a collection of the notes played in ascending or descending order which followed a fixed formula of steps, whereas the two or more notes which also follow a fix formula, played at the same time, is called a chord.
Then what are the important chords?
Again there are plenty of chords like:
- Major Chords
- Minor Chords
- Suspended Chords
- Augmented Chords
- Diminished Chords
- Minor 7th chords
- Major 7th chords
… and the list goes to the tens of important chords
But for learning guitar for Hindi or Bollywood songs, the following two type of chords are for our concern!
- Major chords (Maj chords in short)
- Minor chords (Min chords in short)
Tip #3 Learn 10 Magical Guitar Chords (Learn 1 Chord in 1 Day):
Okay, now the introduction to the compulsory theory has been completed.
Now let us learn the following chords one each day.
In the figures, the number is shown as the finger. The horizontal lines are frets and vertical lines are strings. The thinnest string in the guitar is number 1 string. It goes to the thicker strings in ascending order and the thickest string is called number 6 string.
