4. Connect Headphone and Microphone

This interface supports 6.3 mm jack headphone, so you may  need to use a headphone with 6.3 mm jack. But you can also use your basic earphone of 3.5mm jack after attaching an 6.3mm adaptor which you can SHOP ONLINE HERE. Then you need to connect a mic too. The mic can be connected with either XLR Cable or 6.3mm Jack. Follow these photos for setup:

6.3mm jack adapter is required to connect a 3.5mm Headphone

3.5mm headphone is connected with 6.3mm adapter
You can use this type of adapter to listen from two headphones (One for Singer and another for Recording Technician)
Connecting an XLR Mic to the interface “Input 1”
In left side microphone is connected and in Right side an headphone is connected with 6.3mm adapter, while from backside it is connected with computer with USB cable
Put on the 48V Phantom power button if your microphone works only with phantom power. A red light will glow from the button to indicate that its phantom power is working.
Adjust the Gain Controller knob while speaking to the mic. Ensure that there should be only green light while speaking. Red light means the sound is getting distorted due to too much gain. Hence you need to adjust it so that it does not show red light at your maximum singing volume.

Now the connectivity is over and we will do some settings in Control Panel to listen the audio through our Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Audio Interface.

Setting up Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 in Control Panel:

  1. Go to control panel
  2. Open “Hardware and Sound”
  3. Go to Sound –> Manage Audio Devices
  4. Go to Playback
  5. Identify the Newly added Focusrite Device
  6. Right Click –> Enable
  7. Again Right Click –> Set as Default Communication Device
  8. Similarly Set up Recording Device too
  9. Play any song in your computer and you should listen the sound through your Interface’s Earphone.

Setting up Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 in Audacity:

  5. Do some recording (if you are connected with mic) or drag some audio sample/song in the audacity work area and play. You should listen the sound through the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 headphone.

Setting up Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 in FL Studio

  1. Launch FL Studio software in your computer.
  2. Go to Options–> Audio Settings
  3. On the top most Drop Sown Menu, select the Direct Sound Devices–> Scarlett 2i2 USB
  4.  In the mixer output–> Select Scarlett 2i2
  5. Play something and you should listen sound through the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Audio Interface’s headphone.

Setting up Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 in Cubase

Please read the steps carefully and follow one by one.

Connecting Interface to Cubase

  1. Generally Cubase will ask you on the starting up. Select the “Focusrite USB 2.0 Audio Driver”. DO NOT SELECT ASIO here because it will be having a little latency.
  2. If Cubase does not give options on starting up then go to Menu Bar–> Devices –> Device Setup…
  3. Go to VST Audio System–> Drop down menu–> Focusrite USB 2.0 Audio Driver
  4. Pop up menu–>Switch
  5. Now you can see the changes made in Drop down menu.
  6. Press OK
  7. Go to Devices–>VST Connections
  8. Remove Existing Buses in Input and Output (Right Click on Audio Device–> Remove Bus)
  9. Now we have two inputs on the interface, so we can either record a stereo track (Left and Right mics together) or two mono tracks. It means we have to make three Buses: 1 Stereo + 2 Mono

Add Audio Buses

  1. Click–> Add Bus–> Select Count=1–>Configuration=Stereo –>> Give a Name to the Bus–> Add Bus. You can see a bus added there.
  2. Now add two mono buses: Add Bus–> Count: 2–> Configuration=Mono–>Give a Name to the Bus–> Add Bus. You can see the changes.
  3. In device port Mono Bus 2, click and select= Input 2 (Right)
  4. Lets add output Bus too. Add Bus–> Count=1–>Configuration=Stereo–>Give a name to the bus–> Add Bus. You can see an output bus has been added.
  5. Now close the VST connections Pop up and make a new project by going in File–>New Project. Select any type of project preset or select empty.
  6. Go to project add track–> Audio–> Add stereo track.
  7. Go to the left inspector window. Locate the inputs (you will see the name of the stereo bus you have given). Then select the mic 1 or 2 which you have connected in your interface. Click on the speaker button and you must listen what you speak in your mic.
  8. You can also record by pressing the red recording button and can do the experiments with the inputs and outputs.

5 Best USB Audio Interface for Recording Guitar and Songs for Low Budget Home Song Recording Studio

Best Budget USB Audio Interfaces for Guitar and Voice Recording

Many people want to set up their own music recording studio at home to record cover songs, video dubbing or podcasts. At every time they require high audio quality. Your work can only be recognized if you have effective and clear voice recording. So here in this article I will suggest all Indian Beginner Musicians about best 5 USB Audio Interface in my opinion for your low budget home recording studio.

Audio Interface for Song Recording Studio

What is Audio Interface?

If you have never listened about audio interface then you might be wondering that what is an audio interface?

Focusrite Scarlett Solo USB Audio Interface (Electronics)

List Price: INR 9,178.00
New From: INR 8,190.00 In Stock
Used from: Out of Stock

Well audio interface is nothing but a device which is normally connected with a USB cable to the computer. The main purpose of using audio interface is to connect high end quality microphones and speakers to the computer software without losing much quality and latency issue. Now you will think that if a computer already has 3.5 mm jack for headphone and microphone then why do we require an external audio interface?

The answer is very simple. Because the sound board which comes in CPU has a lot of internal noise and the recording quality is not of the standard level. Also there is a big issue of latency.

So, to eliminate all this negative points due to internal motherboard’s sound card, we have to use an external audio interface, because in music production the quality of audio is everything. This is the thing which every mixing engineer want in the end of a session.

Features to have in an Audio Interface

Which audio interface you should choose for your song recording studio? I have mentioned few important features you should look in an audio interface before purchasing it.

Type of Connectivity with Computer

Normally an audio interface is connected to the computer with a USB cable but you should ensure that the USB should be of high speed for example it should support USB 3.0 connections. So that you can record your audio and listen it without latency.

Number and Types of Input and Output

Another important thing, which you should look in an audio interface is that how many inputs and outputs does it have. Also we have to confirm, what type of connections does it use for connecting microphones and speakers.

Krown XLR Female to 6.3MM Mono Male Microphone Cable 8 Mtr

Normally in a home recording studio, we use either XLR or 6.3mm microphones. So an audio interface should have XLR and 6.3mm Jack connectivity. If you want to record your music band with many musicians playing various music instruments together, then you will need an audio interface which at least supports 8 inputs. However, for home recording studio or beginner’s professional studio you can use an audio interface which is having at least two inputs and two outputs for reference speakers and monitoring headsets.

Supporting Sample Rates

An audio interface having more sample rates will provide more detailed audio recording. An audio interface supporting at least upto 96 KHz will be good option to start.

Phantom Power

(In the context of professional audio equipment) Phantom Power is DC electric power transmitted through microphone cables to operate microphones that contain active electronic circuitry. It is best known as a convenient power source for condenser microphones, though many active direct boxes also use it. The technique is also used in other applications where power supply and signal communication take place over the same wires.

An audio interface must support Phantom Power because most of the high end condenser microphones require Phantom Power.

Direct Monitor

Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 USB Audio Interface (Electronics)

List Price: INR 18,125.00
New From: INR 16,000.00 In Stock
Used from: Out of Stock

Direct monitoring is very important thing which you should have in your audio interface. The main purpose of the direct monitoring, is to monitor all the audio inputs, which are coming in the audio interface. So that we can adjust the volume or effects while recording live. It also helps a singer to sing in synchronization with the beat.

Clipping Indicator

When the audio volume goes beyond zero decibel (maximum level without distortion), then it starts clipping. It means the sound gets distorted. A distorted sound is of no use. Because you cannot improve its quality. When a sound is recorded with a clipping distortion, then you can never make it as good as a sound without distortion by any means.

So there should be and indication (small LED) light which can indicate you whenever the volume for instruments or sounds get much Louder than the acceptable value.

My Priorty for USB Audio Interface Devices

If I was personally asked about choosing from these five my priority would be:
1. Focusrite Solo USB Audio Interface
2. M Audio M Track USB Audio Interface
3. Presonous USB Audio Interface
4. Behringer USB Audio Interface
5. Alesis USB Audio Interface

However it depends upon the requirement and budget of the buyer that which product fulfills his requirement. I hope you will like them.

So here I go.
