Audio Interface for Song Recording Studio

What is Audio Interface?

If you have never listened about audio interface then you might be wondering that what is an audio interface?

Well audio interface is nothing but a device which is normally connected with a USB cable to the computer. The main purpose of using audio interface is to connect high end quality microphones and speakers to the computer software without losing much quality and latency issue. Now you will think that if a computer already has 3.5 mm jack for headphone and microphone then why do we require an external audio interface?

The answer is very simple. Because the sound board which comes in CPU has a lot of internal noise and the recording quality is not of the standard level. Also there is a big issue of latency.

So, to eliminate all this negative points due to internal motherboard’s sound card, we have to use an external audio interface, because in music production the quality of audio is everything. This is the thing which every mixing engineer want in the end of a session.

Features to have in an Audio Interface

Which audio interface you should choose for your song recording studio? I have mentioned few important features you should look in an audio interface before purchasing it.

Type of Connectivity with Computer

Normally an audio interface is connected to the computer with a USB cable but you should ensure that the USB should be of high speed for example it should support USB 3.0 connections. So that you can record your audio and listen it without latency.

Number and Types of Input and Output

Another important thing, which you should look in an audio interface is that how many inputs and outputs does it have. Also we have to confirm, what type of connections does it use for connecting microphones and speakers.

Normally in a home recording studio, we use either XLR or 6.3mm microphones. So an audio interface should have XLR and 6.3mm Jack connectivity. If you want to record your music band with many musicians playing various music instruments together, then you will need an audio interface which at least supports 8 inputs. However, for home recording studio or beginner’s professional studio you can use an audio interface which is having at least two inputs and two outputs for reference speakers and monitoring headsets.

Supporting Sample Rates

An audio interface having more sample rates will provide more detailed audio recording. An audio interface supporting at least upto 96 KHz will be good option to start.

Phantom Power

(In the context of professional audio equipment) Phantom Power is DC electric power transmitted through microphone cables to operate microphones that contain active electronic circuitry. It is best known as a convenient power source for condenser microphones, though many active direct boxes also use it. The technique is also used in other applications where power supply and signal communication take place over the same wires.

An audio interface must support Phantom Power because most of the high end condenser microphones require Phantom Power.

Direct Monitor

Direct monitoring is very important thing which you should have in your audio interface. The main purpose of the direct monitoring, is to monitor all the audio inputs, which are coming in the audio interface. So that we can adjust the volume or effects while recording live. It also helps a singer to sing in synchronization with the beat.

Clipping Indicator

When the audio volume goes beyond zero decibel (maximum level without distortion), then it starts clipping. It means the sound gets distorted. A distorted sound is of no use. Because you cannot improve its quality. When a sound is recorded with a clipping distortion, then you can never make it as good as a sound without distortion by any means.

So there should be and indication (small LED) light which can indicate you whenever the volume for instruments or sounds get much Louder than the acceptable value.
